Here are five things they could do with the No. 3 pick come draft time.
Stand pat and draft a quarterback
The two teams drafting ahead of the Giants — Tennessee and Cleveland — are both in the market for a quarterback but who knows? The Titans are still toying around with Will Levis and the Browns have a huge Deshaun Watson conundrum to deal with.
There’s a slight possibility one of the top two quarterback prospects (Miami’s Cam Ward or Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders) falls to Big Blue at No. 3. If they have not found their man before the draft, they will almost certainly have to bite if either player is in front of them.
Trade up to draft a quarterback
There is a world in which one, or both, prospects wow the football universe at the NFL Combine or their pro days. So much to the point that Giants general manager Joe Schoen has to contemplate moving up to get one of them.
What that will cost the Giants to move from three to two or three to one remains to be seen. They gotta take a shot sometime if they’re ever going to get out of the NFL’s basement. This could be it.
Trade for a quarterback
This is an unlikely scenario but one we’re sure the Giants are exploring. They could be eying a player on an existing NFL roster (not named Daniel Jones) that they see some potential in. Whether or not that package will contain the No. 3 overall pick is another thing.
Scouring the current NFL rosters, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of realistic possibilities for Schoen to pursue. But you never know. Everyone has a price. There are 32 converging philosophies in the offseason and you never know what teams are thinking. The Giants could get lucky here.
Trade back for more draft capital
Trading back is always a good idea for a team in need of multiple things — like the Giants. If Scheon does not have a quarterback option in his pocket or in front of him when the Giants are on the clock, he could take a package of picks and players in return for the pick.
That being said, how many teams would trade up to No. 3 to take a non-quarterback?
Draft Travis Hunter
Hunter, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, is widely regarded as the best player in the draft. Rather than tool around and make a mistake, Schoen could simply take Hunter at No. 3.
It worked out last year when Malik Nabers was there for him at No. 6. Sometimes taking what the football gods give you is the best option. Hunter can give the Giants a boost in all three phases of the game.
