5 things to know about Ireland rugby star Garry Ringrose

Garry Ringrose is hoping to secure another Six Nations win for Ireland but Saturday’s test against Wales didn’t go his way and his yellow card was upgraded to a red.

The 30-year-old centre is a well-known fixture on the Ireland team and has had quite an exciting few years as he tied the knot in 2023 to his longtime love.

But what else do we know about Garry? From where he’s from to how he ended up on the Irish team, here’s all you need to know.

Where is he from?

Garry is 30 years old and hails from Blackrock in County Dublin. He attended Blackrock College before going on to study at University College Dublin.

His parents’ home received lots of attention after the 2023 Six Nations campaign as the team turned up on their doorstep to get Garry involved with the fourth day of celebrations.

Who does he play for?

The sportsman made his debut in the Ireland under 20s team in 2014. He was brought up to the Leinster senior Pro12 squad the following year and made his debut for the club against Cardiff in September 2015.

When did he make his debut for Ireland?

He made his debut on the under 20s Ireland team during the 2014 Six Nations against Scotland, however, he was dropped after the second match against Wales.

He later returned for the IRB Junior World Championships and scored three tries. Garry was shortlisted for the World Rugby Junior Player of the Year.

Garry made his Leinster Rugby debut in September 2015 against Cardiff Blues before making his Irish debut just over a year later against Canada in Aviva Stadium, according to Irish Rugby.

In February 2025, Garry signed a contract extension with Ireland which will see him play for his country until 2028.

What’s his relationship status?

Garry is married to his childhood sweetheart Ellen Beirne. The couple said I Do at Virginia Park Lodge in Cavan in June 2023 which was a busy month for rugby weddings as Conor Murray and Joey Carbery also tied the knot.

Garry previously told EVOKE: ‘Ellen is the best. She’s incredibly supportive, along with my parents and brothers and sisters. In the not-so-good times when you might lose a game; they’re the ones that are picking you back up.

What happened in the Ireland v Wales game?

Garry was given a yellow card in Ireland’s Six Nations clash against Wales on February 22. During half time, this was upgraded to a red card.

He was sent off after tackling Ben Thomas and making head-to-head contact. While Garry’s game is over, new rules mean that Ireland will be able to replace Garry’s position after 20 minutes.
