NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) — A 9-year-old child was shot and killed on Friday night in Newark, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

It happened just after 5:30 p.m. at 170 Osborne Terrace, officials said.

The 9-year-old boy was pronounced dead at University Hospital, officials said.

The Prosecutor’s Office also said an adult male was shot as well, but there is no word on his injuries.

“We don’t know what this situation happened for, but we know a kid got shot and this is devastating to our city. And this is one of our worst fears that we could ever think of, somebody killing our future,” said Ani violence activist Khalil Tutt.

Detectives are going through a house on Yates Avenue and a car on Osborne Terrace marking and collecting evidence where an 8-year-old boy and a male adult were shot.

So far there are no arrests.

One neighbor tells Eyewitness News he heard as many as 10 shots. Another saw what looked like a car crash behind the crime scene tape.

“There’s a car flipped over and then there’s an SUV like pointed towards it, I guess they collided,” neighbor Michelle Ferguson said.

It’s not clear how or if a vehicle crash is connected to the shooting, but those who live on these blocks now taped off for an investigation are understandably rattled.

“It’s hurtful because if we were walking with my child, something could’ve happened. But I hope that they catch whoever,” another neighbor said.

Anti-Violence activist Khalil Tutt has a message for whoever would think about doing something so reckless.

“I hope this can wake y’all up, y’all can see this, see a baby got killed over some nonsense they had nothing to do with, and I hope this could change some of y’all hearts.”

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka released a statement calling the shooting “sickening” and urged the killer to turn themselves in.

“It is sickening to me that anyone would be so deranged to recklessly endanger an innocent child. And that the child lost his life, is just infuriating to me as a father myself. We will not tolerate this reckless and dangerous behavior. The killer should know- we are coming after you. We are not going to rest until we find you, so turn yourself in now.”

The Essex County Sherriff’s Office is offering a $10,000 reward to anyone with information leading to an arrest.
