An alleged getaway driver who whisked two masked men away from a violent armed hold-up at a western Sydney pub has been arrested.

The two alleged robbers, armed with a handgun and knife, stormed into the Wiley Park Hotel in the early hours of September 11 last year and threatened and assaulted staff, before stealing tens of thousands of dollars and fleeing in a stolen car, police said.

The hold-up came just half an hour after an alleged attempted robbery of the Bexley North Hotel, which was foiled by a door that was locked.

On Thursday, the 29-year-old alleged driver was arrested by detectives at a home in Sydenham, in Sydney’s inner west. He was charged over the robbery and attempted robbery and appeared in Newtown Local Court. He was refused bail and is due to reappear on April 1.

Police charged the two other men in September last year and they remain before the courts.
