‘A tragic incident’ – Community left in shock as girl, 6, killed in Galway crash while out riding her bike

A COMMUNITY in Galway city have been left in shock and evastation after a girl was tragically killed while out riding her bike yesterday.

The six-year-old girl was cycling when she was involved in a collision with a truck at a junction.

Gardai and emergency services were called to the scene yesterday afternoon shortly after 12pm at Headford Road, Co Galway.

The girl was fatally injured at the scene. Her body was removed for a post mortem examination.

The driver of the truck involved in the incident, aged in his 30s, was uninjured.

The local community have been left in shock following the girl’s death.

The young girl has yet to be named locally.

Fine Gael councillor Frank Fahy told RTE: “It’s a tragic incident happening in our community.

“I’d like to sympathise on my own behalf and on behalf of the community to the parents and family of the deceased.”

Gardai are still appealing for witnesses to the crash to come forward.

In a statement yesterday evening, An Garda Siochana said: “Gardai in Galway are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision that occurred at Headford Road, Galway this afternoon Saturday 5th April, 2025 at approximately 12.05pm.

“The collision involved a female juvenile pedal cyclist and a heavy goods vehicle at the junction of Headford Road and Sandyvale Lawn.

“The female pedal cyclist, aged 6 years was fatally injured as a result of the collision.

“Her body was removed from the scene to University Hospital Galway and a post mortem will take place in due course.

“The male driver of the truck, aged in his 30s was uninjured.

“The road was closed and a technical examination of the scene by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators has taken place. The road has now reopened.”

They continued: “Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

“Gardai are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area of the Headford Road (N84) between Coolough Road/Headford Road junction and the entrance to Tirellan Heights/Headford Road junction in Galway city between 11:45am and 12:15pm today Saturday 5th April 2025 are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Galway Garda Station on 091 538 000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
