Florida State University alerted students and staff Thursday that an active shooter was on campus.
According to the alert, the shooter was reported to be in the area of the Student Union at the university’s main campus in Tallahassee.
“Police are on scene or on the way,” the alert sent around noon read. “Continue to seek shelter and await further instructions. Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures.”
A nearby hospital says it is treating people affected by the shooting. Sarah Cannon, a spokesperson with Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare, said the hospital cannot yet confirm the number of people in care, and said the details are still unfolding.
Forrest Saunders, a Tallahassee-based reporter for E.W. Scripps, reported that he saw a man being “shackled” by law enforcement before being taken away.
Cellphone video shows people running across the street, away from campus as buildings in the area were placed on lockdown.
A witness told reporters they heard the sound of automatic gunfire at one point.
Several schools and daycares in the area were reportedly on lockdown as a precaution.
According to ABC News, the FBI is assisting authorities at FSU.
No other details were immediately released.
