SAN JOSE — An affordable homes apartment project in San Jose developed with cutting-edge construction techniques could sprout on an empty lot if city officials approve the proposal.
Cloud Apartments is floating a plan to develop a 174-unit affordable housing project at 2165 The Alameda in San Jose along one of the corridors leading to the city’s downtown, according to documents on file with city planners.
The affordable units would be built offsite using modular construction techniques.
The units would then be transported to the development site to be snapped into place and connected to other pre-fabricated units at the 2165 The Alameda location.
“Cloud Apartments is ushering in a new era of home building that we call Construction 3.0,” the development firm states on its website. The developer added that this approach is “significantly faster and less expensive than traditional construction, with a consistent, high standard of quality.”
San Jose planners intend to review the proposal through an administrator’s hearing on April 9.
The 174-unit affordable housing complex is slated to be a seven-story apartment building, city planning documents show.
The development would provide 120 parking spaces, some at ground level and some underground, the city planning documents show.
The development site is a vacant lot located on a busy stretch of The Alameda that leads to downtown San Jose.
The proposed affordable housing development is slated to have an array of amenities.
A rooftop deck, gym, lounge and the parking garage are among the features the company lists on its website for the 2165 The Alameda project.
Besides San Jose, Cloud Apartments is eyeing projects in Concord, Berkeley, Redwood City and Watsonville.
“The housing crisis can’t wait,” Cloud Apartments states on its website. “Construction must evolve. America has a shortage of 7 million homes and traditional construction alone can’t solve this crisis.”
