Body searches will be ramped up for football fans at the MCG after security staff failed to stop two men from allegedly carrying loaded guns into Thursday night’s Carlton-Collingwood blockbuster.
Melbourne Cricket Club chief executive Stuart Fox said AI-powered technology had detected items of concern, but staff had failed to follow up with a thorough search.
The way MCG officials ramp up security will be seen at Saturday’s clash between Richmond and Brisbane Lions – the first match at the venue since more than 82,000 fans attended the Blues-Magpies clash.
“Our security screening units identified items of concern and further investigation was required, our initial internal investigation identified a breakdown in the thoroughness of the secondary and manual screening process,” Fox said on Friday after Thursday night’s drama at the ’G.
“As a result, we will be increasing the extensiveness of the secondary manual security process and patrons may experience slight delays as they attend upcoming events.”
Ben Long continues to a barometer for the drive and effort of this Suns side.
He has just surged forward and pulled in a strong mark before going back and converting the goals.
The Suns have responded to that challenge from the Crows.
Suns 21, Crows 9 with eight mins to go in Q1.
The Crows have found their feet on the Gold Coast forcing a turnover in their forward half and then drawing a free kick via the deft forward play of Darcy Fogarty.
He was held and then went back and kicked the goal from a tight angle.
This Crows attack is a potent one.
Suns 15, Crows 8 with 10 mins to go in Q1.
Make that two-straight goals from the Suns.
Ethan Read got behind James Borlase and leapt over him to pull in a big mark and then kick the goal.
He only just kicked the ball through the goals and held his two fingers together to show how close it went to the post.
But a goal is a goal.
Suns 13, Crows 0 with 16 mins to go in Q1.
The Suns have dominated the field position to start the match and it has led to Ben King pulling in a strong mark 20m from goal.
He went back and put it through. There is some frustration the umpire didn’t make Matt Rowell take the preceding free kick after stopping play but what’s done is done now.
Suns 7, Crows 0 with 18 mins to go in Q1.
Let’s hope today’s AFL players kick the ball better than Peter Dutton was today lol……
It was a classic case of a picture opportunity gone wrong.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton was in Darwin this morning, where he stopped to make a funding announcement for a local footy club, the Palmerston Magpies.
Dutton and his entourage, including Northern Territory Senator Jacinta Price, then headed down to the oval for a casual kick with a group of children.
A group of cameramen took their positions to get the shot the Coalition’s media team had come for. But after kicking the footy back and forth, one from Dutton’s boot went awry.
The ball went straight towards 10 News First cameraman Ghaith Nadir who was filming the exchange, knocking his camera into his head and resulting in a bloodied forehead. Nadir gave his gear to a colleague and took a towel to his head.
Neither side has made a late change with Jake Rogers (Suns) and Luke Nankervis (Crows) the subs.
