It was a marathon quarter, almost 34 minutes in total. Bailey Smith has made a busy start in Geelong colours, picking up 10 touches. It’s single goal-kickers all round, with Gryan Miers, Patrick Dangerfield, Oliver Henry, Oliver Dempsey, Jack Bowes and Fremantle’s Andrew Brayshaw on the board.

Star Geelong defender Tom Stewart copped a heavy hit in a rare appearance in the centre square. It seemed entirely accidental, but the Cat was hit as he bent down to try and pick up the footy. Stewart headed for the bench and was seen grimacing in pain. It doesn’t appear serious, but Stewart may need some time out on the interchange.

Geelong 3.3 (21) lead Fremantle 1.0 (6) after 23 minutes

It’s a sultry and muggy March day in Melbourne. At Albert Park, the F1 show is in full swing.

But, firstly, down the highway in Geelong, the intriguing clash between the Cats and Fremantle is up and going. It has been an entertaining start so far, and plenty of eyes on new Geelong player and former Bulldog Bailey Smith.

Sam Mitchell’s box office Hollywood Hawks are the early March champions. This is not intended as a slight. Last year, Hawthorn didn’t open their account until the third weekend of April, which cost them a decent spot on the grid in September. They are not making that mistake again.
