Albert Serra’s San Sebastián Winner ‘Afternoons Of Solitude’ Gets North American Deal​on March 7, 2025 at 4:01 pm

EXCLUSIVE: Grasshopper Film has acquired North American distribution rights to Afternoons Of Solitude by Spanish director Albert Serra.

In Afternoons Of Solitude, Serra trains a patient and poetic lens on the pomp and devastating brutality of bullfighting via a portrait of the charismatic Peruvian-born star torero Andrés Roca Rey.

Serra’s first feature documentary premiered at the 2024 San Sebastián International Film Festival, where it won the Golden Shell. It received its US premiere at the 62^nd New York Film Festival. It will open June 27 at Film at Lincoln Center in New York, followed by other cities.

The deal was negotiated by Ryan Krivoshey of Grasshopper Film with Jean-Christophe Simon and Julien Razafindranaly of Films Boutique. Producers are Andergraun Films (Spain), LaCima Producciones (Spain), Idéale Audience (France), and Rosa Filmes (Portugal).

Serra’s previous work, Pacifiction (also distributed by Grasshopper Film), starring Benoît Magimel, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and received nine César Awards nominations (winning for Best Actor and Best Cinematography).
