A Fort McMurray woman has been accused of putting her child’s safety in danger after police allegedly saw her bring her toddler to a drug deal.

The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) said in a Thursday morning statement the woman was already being watched as part of a drug trafficking investigation. On Oct. 31, police say they saw the woman bring the toddler to a drug transaction.

When ALERT later searched the woman’s home, cocaine near the child’s toys and play area was allegedly found by officers. A total of roughly 25 grams of cocaine with an estimated street value of $2,500 was reportedly found in the home.
“It is incomprehensible to bring a child to a drug deal and expose them to this level of risk. Upon learning this information, we prioritized this investigation to ultimately get this child out of harm’s way,” said Staff Sgt. Mark Wait with ALERT in a statement.

The name of the suspect is not being released to protect the identity of the child. Alberta’s Children’s Services were notified. ALERT spokesperson Ashley Wiebe said the child is with other family members.
The suspect has been charged with drug trafficking, possessing drugs for the purpose of trafficking, causing a child to be in need of intervention, and charges under Alberta’s Drug-Endangered Children Act. She is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 25.
The Drug-Endangered Children Act allows police intervention if they believe children are living in drug houses or are being exposed to other illegal drug activity, such as manufacturing.
