A Kelowna man is facing several charges including arson and possession of explosives after allegedly shutting down the William R. Bennett Bridge in January.

Roy Winter, 61, was taken into police custody Tuesday after he was released from hospital. He was charged with 11 offences, including arson, making or possessing explosives, use of explosives to cause serious bodily harm, mischief, nuisance, assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, uttering threats, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He remains in custody until his next court appearance on April 3.

“This is a well co-ordinated and sizable investigation spearheaded by the Kelowna RCMP’s general investigative support team,” said RCMP spokesman Cpl. Michael Gauthier in a statement.

The William R. Bennett Bridge connects Kelowna to West Kelowna. It was closed for nearly 11 hours on Jan. 27. At the time, police said “an individual in crisis” started a small fire in a vehicle parked in the eastbound lanes.

A bomb squad attended the scene and later cleared the vehicle.
