Curtis Wayne Sagmoen is dead, according to missing women advocate Jody Leon.

She heard the news from the family of Traci Genereaux, whose remains were found on Sagmoen’s parents’ Shuswap-area farm in 2017.

Genereaux’s grandmother Darcy Martin was informed by RCMP about Sagmoen’s death on Friday. No details were provided.

Leon said she had mixed feelings about Sagmoen’s death. “The loss of any life is something that’s tragic,” but at the same time her heart goes out to the families who may not get any answers about their missing loved-ones.

“Curtis is now dead, and he was never charged (in relation to Genereaux’s death) and nobody was ever named a suspect, and they don’t know what happened to their daughter and granddaughter.”

According to court documents, Sagmoen had been convicted of acting violently against sex workers in three separate cases.

In January 2013, Sagmoen assaulted a woman in a dispute over payment for services.

In August 2017, he pointed a shot gun into the driver’s side window of a woman when she attempted to leave his property. The woman fled on foot. Police later found a hole in the vehicle’s front tire

Then, a month later, in September 2017, Sagmoen ran over a woman with an ATV.

The victims in all three cases were female escorts who had met with Sagmoen at his family farm.

After Sagmoen was charged in relation to the August 2017 incident, police searched the 24-acre property and found Genereaux’s remains. Sagmoen was not charged in connection to Genereaux’s disappearance or death.

In 2022, RCMP issued a press release warning that Sagmoen had court-imposed probation conditions, which prohibited contact with sex trade workers.

Sagmoen had more recent offences relating to breaches of probation, including an alleged breach last November in Salmon Arm and another alleged violation last April in Kamloops.
