Belfast airport advises Heathrow passengers against travel amid cancellations due to fire

Passengers expecting to travel to Heathrow on Friday have been advised not to turn up to Belfast City Airport as a fire at the London airport causes mass cancellations.

A power outage outage caused by a fire at Heathrow airport has led to all flights to and from its terminals cancelled on Friday.

A spokesperson for George Best Belfast City Airport said on Friday morning that passengers whose flights have been cancelled should contact their airline directly.

“Due to the ongoing incident detailed below, passengers due to fly to or from Heathrow Airport today should not travel to the airport until further notice and should contact their airline,” a statement said.

Flights to and from Belfast International Airport are unaffected as there are no flights which travel between the two.

A social media post from London Heathrow Airport said it would remain closed until midnight on Friday.

“Due to a fire at an electrical substation supplying the airport, Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage,” it said.

“To maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, Heathrow will be closed until 23h59 on 21 March.

“Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport and should contact their airline for further information. We apologise for the inconvenience.”

Dublin Airport said 34 flights to Heathrow are cancelled on Friday due to the incident.

“All flights scheduled between Dublin Airport and London Heathrow up until at least mid-afternoon today (Friday) have been cancelled following the closure of Heathrow Airport due to a power outage,” a statement said.

“A total of 34 flights were scheduled between Dublin Airport and Heathrow today (17 inbound and 17 outbound).

“Further disruption to flights between Dublin and Heathrow scheduled for later today is likely.

“Passengers looking for updates regarding specific flights or to re-book or change flight are advised to contact their airline directly by phone or online.”
