You see, if there is one group backing Mark Carney and the Liberals it is the baby boomers.

We’re especially talking about those who have seen their homes or other assets skyrocket in value and who supported a system giving them the good life but that’s now crumbling, leaving younger people holding the bag.

Younger people are asking a lot of questions about how they managed to end up getting the short end of the stick.

Gordon Campbell was the premier of British Columbia and led the province’s Liberal party. Campbell is also a baby boomer.

“What we should really ask ourselves is a simple question. I would hope voters will ask this: Am I better off now than I was 10 years ago?”

Ten years ago, when the Liberal party under Justin Trudeau promised sunny ways and delivered stormy days.

“OK, if they are better off, they make their own choice. I think if they look at the facts they will say we can’t carry on with where we are and that’s the story we have to keep pushing to people,” says Campbell.

But say you’re living in a place like Toronto where you bought your house decades ago and its value is now through the roof. Those people are sitting pretty.

“That’s the challenge. We have to think of the next generation, not just ourselves. At some point, and I think this is it, we say to the boomers: What about your grandkids? What about your kids?

“They have done a lot to undermine our self-confidence,” says Campbell.

“We’re on the wrong path in Canada right now. We’re on the path to more debt, more taxes, a weaker economy, an economy more dependent on the Americans. After 10 years of that, let’s change it.”
