Reports say Trudeau told Trump that Canada would be hurt badly if the U.S. put tariffs on Canadian goods.

Trump suggested Canada could become the 51st state of the United States to avoid tariffs.

Trudeau’s people said Trump was not serious.

But Trump kept talking about Canada as the 51st state. He even called Trudeau the governor.

The more Trump talked, the more the press reported on it, the more the Liberals talked about the 51st state as a more than a joke and then said it was a threat and then a plan to take over Canada, the more Canadians got worked up.

It seemed every time Trump mentioned the 51st state something happened.

The Liberals knew Canadians wouldn’t be forced to become Americans.

What they did know is they had magic in a bottle. This was the formula for a remarkable resurrection from the political grave.

They would be the party of patriots. The party resisting Trump and the U.S. over Canada.

The party believing there was no core to Canadian identity and the biggest feature of Canadians was not being American shamelessly wrapped themselves in the flag.

This wasn’t just a trade war. It was a war over Canada’s very existence.

For the click-hungry press this was too good to be true.

A poll late last year showed most Canadians were not patriotic at all. Then, and it didn’t take long, the same folks were Canadian this and Canadian that and only one step remained to be taken.

To be Canadian was to be Liberal.
