Many of us are feeling abandoned since we are no longer receiving daily calls from the Liberals, Conservatives or NDP asking for donations or extolling their candidate’s virtues. Election decision-making now seems to be based on who made the most phone calls, knocked on doors and collected the most money.

Winston Churchill’s comment about democracy was that, “It is the worst form of government except for all of those other forms that have been tried from time to time.”

When the election results came in Monday night, many Canadians, especially in Alberta, were thinking of Churchill’s other quote referring to America: “Americans will always do the right thing after they have exhausted all other choices.” Once again, the Canadian public has chosen to elect a minority Liberal government, leading us to question the “wisdom of crowds.”

The election of a minority Liberal government will produce massive bleating from Alberta, as it continues to enjoy the lowest taxes, the highest provincial GDP, the highest wages and the most provincial dollars per capita spent on health care in Canada. The loudest voices will suggest that a Conservative government would have been the one that would push through another pipeline, even though nine years of Conservative governments never did accomplish a mile of new pipeline.

There will be voices suggesting that Alberta would be better off as a stand-alone country. The fact that Alberta has no access to oceans and would have to bring all goods through other provinces is overlooked by people who want to have their own independent, landlocked nation. Perhaps we should lower our standard of living to that of states such as Montana, Idaho or Wyoming to shed ourselves of the vagaries of socialism that we have in Canada.

The Liberals do not deserve another four years in government. The country operates best with a balance between periods of Liberal spending interrupted by Conservative attempts to balance the books.

But the Conservatives blew a 27-point lead by ignoring obvious changes happening in the Liberal party. By failing to produce a strategic plan that explained what Conservatives would do in office, they built a campaign on slogans and verbal attacks.

Slogans might grab attention, but solid ideas win elections. The public perception was that the Liberals simply had better ideas. Once Liberal Leader Mark Carney stated that he would “axe the tax,” the air seemed to leave the Conservative balloon.

There’s a rub, however. Can this Liberal government be trusted to do what it says it will do? The track record is not great.
