National Weather Service officials are expecting scattered showers and thunderstorms Friday morning in Chicago and parts of northwest Indiana.
While officials said the risk of severe weather and flash flooding was fairly low Friday morning, additional thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon hours carrying damaging wind with a risk of hail and brief tornadoes, officials said.
Those storms might be capable of producing torrential rain of 2 inches per hour, officials warn. In recent days, western Chicago experienced torrential rain that produced rain of more than 5 inches within 90 minutes.
Friday, officials warned the torrential rain could create flash flooding, but the risk was minimal.
Saturday, more thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon and evening, specifically south and east of I-55 with a risk of isolated strong systems with possible damaging wind gust and heavy rainfall, officials said.
Current conditions at Midway Airport is overcast at 75 degrees. Farther north at O’Hare International Airport conditions are nearly the same at 72 degrees, officials reported.
Friday, temperatures are expected to reach the mid 80s with a 40 percent chance of heavy rain. Saturday, the chance of thunderstorms is 50 percent with highs in the upper 80s.
