Concern over ‘out of control’ dogs in north Donegal – Cllr McClafferty

A councillor has expressed his frustration over what he described as ‘out of control’ dogs in north Donegal.

Cllr Michael McClafferty said there is both ‘great annoyance and concern’ over the issue in the Dunfanaghy area and the Glenties MD in general.

“There is both great annoyance and concern of the out of control problem of dogs running riot at will,” he said.

For example, he said, dogs without leads running up to people and jumping on them was a frightening experience.

“This is occurring on the beaches and in our parks, from the smallest to the largest dog breeds. This practise is simply not on at all.”

He stressed that dogs should be under control at all times, especially where children or vulnerable people are present.

“There is also so much dog pooh at the minute on our footpaths and streets, it’s just disgusting and very sick to say the least,” he added.

“Think about small children out walking, taking their first steps or the mums and dads out walking their little ones with prams, tricycles, go karts, then a child comes across dog pooh unknown to their parents. Maybe it gets on their hands, clothes, toys or buggy wheels. If it gets into their eyes it could mean permanent blindness. Toxocarra is a serious eye infection that causes blindness.”

Cllr McClafferty urged dog owners to ‘please cop on’ and clean up after their pets. “Have poop scoop bags with you or disposable gloves etc at the very least. Imagine if your dog left a child blind – how would you feel? Think about it. Your responsibility, your actions, your choice.”
