CPD: Man with knife at assisted living facility fatally shot by police in Grand Crossing​on May 5, 2025 at 9:42 pm

CHICAGO (WLS) — A resident of an assisted living facility in the Grand Crossing neighborhood who Chicago police said was armed with a knife was shot and killed by officers Monday morning.

At about 2:50 a.m., Chicago police said they responded to a report of a person with a knife threatening residents at the Grand Regency of Jackson Park in the 1400-block of East 75th Street

Officers went to the unit where the suspect lived and attempted to speak with him, police said.

After officers gained access, they confronted the suspect who was armed with a knife and officers used a Taser, which did not subdue the suspect, police said.

Police said the suspect advanced toward officers while armed with the knife and officers fired at him, killing him.

“It’s scary,” Maxine Johnson, who lives in the building, said. “It’s terrifying, I know. I can’t even believe it.”

The facility is listed as a program for adults with physical disabilities who need assistance.

While she does not know who was killed, one woman who’s been in the building for two years said she has safety concerns living there.

“No, I don’t feel safe,” Johnson said. “I feed scared all the time.”

The identity of the man has not yet been released.

A knife was recovered from the scene, police said. The Investigation Response Team and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability are investigating. The officers involved will be placed on administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days.
