A 20-year-old suspect faces several charges for sexual interference and online extortion after a public warning from RCMP last month

A 20-year-old Cranbrook man has been arrested after police issued a public warning last month about alleged online extortion and sexual interference against girls as young as 11 years old.

On March 11, Cranbrook RCMP said girls 11 to 14 years old had been targeted on social media by an unknown man soliciting sexually intimate images in exchange for drugs, alcohol and money.

“There is a common misconception that sexual predators live somewhere in the dark corners of the internet, when they’re actually alive and well on social media and in chat groups,” Staff Sgt. Kris Clark said at the time.

The suspect was arrested for several sexual and online offences and has been released with conditions until an appearance in court in future.

“This is a direct result of the hard work by our local officers that remain dedicated to the protection of public safety,” said Cranbrook RCMP Cpl. Felicia Parker in a statement on Wednesday.

Police are encouraging parents and guardians to be aware of their child’s online activity and to educate both themselves and their kids about setting boundaries and staying safe online.
