CTA employee hit with gun charge after fatal West Loop shootingon April 16, 2025 at 6:21 pm

A CTA employee was charged with illegal gun possession following a fatal shooting near a train station in the West Loop last weekend, court records show.

Luther Hopkins, 24, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with the April 12 shooting death of 61-year-old John Flemister in the 400 block of South Peoria, according to Cook County court records.

During his initial court appearance Tuesday, a county judge ordered Hopkins released pending trial.

Hopkins’ arrest report says he claimed to have shot Flemister in self-defense, and the Cook County state’s attorney’s office declined to charge him with first-degree murder. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 21.

In a statement to the Tribune, the CTA said it “has been fully cooperating with local law enforcement as they investigate this matter, including providing any relevant surveillance footage as part of the investigation.”

A police source familiar with the investigation, but not permitted to speak publicly, told the Tribune that CTA surveillance footage captured the confrontation between Hopkins and Flemister. Another CTA employee attempted to separate the two men before Hopkins fired the gun.
