A 45-year-old man is being questioned by police after his wife’s body was found at the scene of a suspicious house fire west of Brisbane on Tuesday morning.
Emergency services were called to a home on Strack Road in Geham, north of Toowoomba, about 2.50am on Tuesday and arrived to find it “fully engulfed” in flames.
Fire crews had the blaze under control by 4am. After initial searches of the scene, police and fire investigators found the body of a woman believed to be that of mother Louise Hunt, who remains unaccounted for.
Police declared a crime scene around the area, and homicide detectives arrived from Brisbane later on Tuesday to help local officers.
Police Superintendent George Marchesini confirmed the home’s residents included two young children, who were “safe, well and accounted for”.
On Tuesday afternoon, police located 45-year-old Cameron Hunt almost 200 kilometres away in Redcliffe. He was being held in custody while helping officers with their inquiries. No charges had been laid as of Tuesday evening.
Police were still investigating the cause of the blaze on Tuesday afternoon.
“These sorts of incidents will always be treated as suspicious, and crime scenes declared, until we can prove otherwise,” Marchesini said.

“It’s a terrible situation when you have an incident like this, and what I mean by that is any person who’s deceased in a dwelling from the result of a fire.”
The Fire Department said at least six crews were initially called to the scene, with several still there about 9am, while police continued their investigation through to the afternoon.
Marchesini said there was no ongoing threat to the public, and he urged anyone with information to come forward.
“We’re actively searching for any person that can actually assist, and that’s any person who’s related to that incident,” he said.
