Delays on CTA after Green Line train derails in Englewood early Mondayon February 10, 2025 at 6:11 pm

Fifteen passengers on a CTA Green Line train were rescued after the train derailed early Monday, according to the Chicago Fire Department. Three people were taken to St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center following the derailment, according to officials.

The Fire Department responded about 2:37 a.m. to a derailment on the Green Line Englewood extension around 63rd Street and Normal, according to Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford. The derailment caused service to be temporarily suspended between Garfield and Ashland/63rd, according to the CTA.

The derailment is currently forcing Green Line trains traveling toward Ashland/63rd to only operate from Harlem/Lake to 35th-Bronzeville-IIT. Bus substitutions are also in place between 35th and Ashland/63rd due to the derailment.

“The train became stalled due to a problem with the rear wheels, we’re told,” Langford said, explaining that the rear wheels lost contact with the track on one of the cars. The Fire Department rescued people with a special ladder truck that has a platform attached.

“We can put that up to the door of a CTA car, they can open the doors and people could literally walk out of the train onto the platform and be lowered just like it’s an elevator,” Langford said.
