Derry City boss Tiernan Lynch shrugs off reports of players’ antics on night out

DERRY City manager Tiernan Lynch hasn’t made a big deal over reports of his players’ behaviour on a night out last weekend.

Some videos were shared around on social media showing some of his squad celebrating Danny Mullen’s birthday in a bar in the city on Saturday evening.

One video in particular showed new signing Gavin Whyte using some foul language criticising Lynch, but the City gaffer has played down the incidents.

“I don’t do social media so I didn’t get to see the videos or whatever it was,” he confirmed.

“One of the players at a birthday party; nothing more or nothing less and it’s not something we’re making a big deal out of and it’s certainly not anything I’m making a big deal out of.

“The boys were back in on Monday morning and trained really well and we moved on.

”Some Derry supporters were fuming that the players were seen to be out celebrating despite sitting at the bottom of the table, but the 49-year-old feels it doesn’t matter what position to be in no matter the circumstances.

“I don’t think it matters whether you’re top of the league or bottom of the league, everybody has to conduct themselves with a hat on that they’re representing Derry City,” he explained.

“If we feel there’s things that need to be dealt with internally, conversations that need to happen internally, they’ll all be done internally and they’ll never be anything that we feel that we’ll need to come out to the press and talk about.

“We win together and we lose together, we make mistakes together and we get round each other and that’s the culture that we’re trying to build.”

The Foylesiders play their final game before the international break on Saturday when they travel to fellow strugglers Sligo Rovers and Lynch is only focusing on his side getting their first competitive victory at the Showgrounds since 2021.
