Derry Girls star Saoirse-Monica Jackson lands exciting new role on Broadway

Derry Girls star Saoirse-Monica Jackson has landed a huge new role on Broadway, taking to the stage in New York for the show Irishtown.

The play, written by Ciara Elizabeth Smyth, will make its world premiere this spring at the Irish Repertory Theatre’s Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage starting April 2, ahead of an April 13 opening night.

The play will also feature Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’s Angela Reed and Purgatory star Kevin Oliver Lynch, with voiceover work by Roger Clark.

Irishtown, directed by Nicola Murphy Dubey, depicts the story of a Dublin-based theater company that begins rehearsals for their new play, only to discover that the playwright has made the story too dark and experimental, and not Irish enough.

In an attempt to restore the play’s Irish roots, the company decides to take matters into their own hands and chaos arises.

This will not be Saoirse’s first time hitting the stage as she has also appeared in the West End production of Jez Butterworth’s The Ferryman.

And, aside from Derry Girls, the 31-year-old has also appeared in the films Finding You, The Flash and, Upgraded, and most recently in Netflix’s black comedy series The Decameron, with Zosia Mamet.

Not only is Saoirse busy with her career, she is also up the walls in her personal life as her wedding prep is well and truly underway for her and her Scottish DJ fiancé.

The Derry Girls actress and her beau Denis Sulta, whose real name is Hector Barbour, announced their engagement in February.

One major thing the couple needs to check off their to-do list is their guest list and the couple have a host of relatives from both their Irish and Scottish clans coming to their big day.

Speaking to Cosmopolitan, Saoirse said: ‘We’re planning our wedding at the moment. I have a ginormous family. He’s so down for a big wedding, but I don’t want to spend the day feeling anxious that I haven’t got round to everybody.’

Saoirse gushed about how relaxed their romance is, saying: ‘I love being at home with Hector. We love chilling, and not being at the centre of cool parties – watching Moana with him makes me so happy.’
