LEWISVILLE, Texas — The sanctuary inside Westside Baptist Church was filled with grief, prayer and remembrance Monday night as the community gathered to support Denton County Commissioner Bobbie Mitchell and honor the life of her husband, Fred Mitchell.
Lewisville police said early Monday morning, the couple was stabbed at home by their own grandson. Fred Mitchell died from his injuries, and Bobbie Mitchell remains hospitalized.
“What a kind, gentle, godly man he was,” Denton County Judge Andy Eads said during the vigil.
Eads, who has worked alongside Mitchell for years and has known her since elementary school, described the attack as “devastating” and difficult to comprehend.
Mitchell, a longtime public servant, made history as the first Black mayor of Lewisville. She served on the Lewisville City Council for a decade and has held a seat on the Denton County Commissioners Court for the past 25 years.
“She deserves to have a community of faith that prays for her,” said Pastor Delvin Atchison, who led the service.
Throughout the evening, there were tears, embraces and quiet moments of reflection. Churchgoers described Mitchell as a woman of strong faith, known in the community for praying over others.
“We’re just praying for her and Fred and all their family and all the lives she’s touched here,” said Sue Bowman, a friend who met Mitchell through the local Rotary Club. “We just love her. Our hearts love her.”
Fred Mitchell’s memory was honored through stories and shared prayers. Mourners spoke about the couple’s dedication to their faith, their service and the deep sorrow they now face.
“There’s some things you don’t get over,” Pastor Atchison said. “You just gotta get through.”
Before the service ended, Mitchell’s nephew stood to thank the community.
“We feel the love. We appreciate all of you,” he said. “We can’t thank y’all enough for the support. It’s a blessing, and we feel it. Thank you.”
