Calgary fire crews responded to a building fire early Sunday morning at a construction site in Bridgeland.

The Calgary Fire Department said it responded to reports of a fire in the area of McDougall Road and 9A Street N.E. at around 4:45 a.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, crews found smoke and visible fire on the fifth floor of a six-storey building under construction.

Due to the size of the structure, additional crews were brought in to ensure sufficient resources.

“Because of the large complex, spanning nearly two blocks, a second alarm was called to ensure adequate resources were on scene,” the fire department said in a release.

Firefighters launched a co-ordinated response, using both interior teams and elevated fire streams to battle the blaze.

CFD said the fire was located in a large room on the fifth floor that was used to store construction equipment and tools.

As of Sunday morning, the fire was under control and crews were working to ventilate smoke from the structure.

According to CFD, there were no residents in the structure and no injuries reported by civilians or firefighters.

Calgary police and Alberta Health Service personnel were also on scene to assist.
