Good Friday is a nationally recognized stat holiday, so Calgarians can expect some adjusted schedules in the city that day. Easter Monday is an optional stat in Alberta, so businesses can choose whether or not they want to recognize the holiday.

Elementary, high school and university students in Calgary will be out of the classroom for Good Friday and Easter Monday, and most major banks will be closed on Friday.

Other city services and businesses will be operating with limited holiday hours over the weekend, with some hosting Easter-specific activities and events.

Easter Eggstravaganza

Easter Eggstravaganza brings Easter-themed activities to the Calgary Zoo/ Wilder Institute. There will be treat stations set up around the Zoo where kids can pickup candy, after partaking in a candy bag decorating activity, while exploring the grounds. The event takes place from April 18 to 20 during Zoo hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Easter egg hunt for dogs

Thousands of colourful eggs will be hidden around Calaway Park’s south field, filled with prize tokens and a dog treat. Leashed dogs will search for the eggs with the assistance of their humans, and each dog participant will receive a gift bag. All funds raised from the event through pledges will support National Service Dogs programs. The Easter egg hunt runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Good Friday.

Easter at the Calgary Farmers’ Market

The Calgary Farmers Market is transforming for Easter weekend, offering egg painting, photo opportunities, a colouring contest and more. There will be prizes available throughout the day, including money for the market, vendor discounts and other market prizes. Festivities will be at the south market April 17 to 20, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and at the west market April 16 to 19 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and April 20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Spring Babies Festival

Butterfield Acres is hosting a festival over the Easter long weekend to celebrate the arrival of baby farm animals. On April 18, 19 and 20, there will be opportunities to visit with the animals, take photos, ride ponies and more. Warm up by the fire pit with hot chocolate, coffee, tea and s’mores. There is also an 18+ date night event on April 19 from 5 to 9 p.m.

Easter tea and brunch at Heritage Park

Enjoy finger sandwiches, treats and tea at Heritage Park’s annual Easter Tea event, located inside the Famous 5 Centre of Canadian Women. Taking place April 18, 19 and 20, a ticket to the event includes park admission and an optional guided tour. Heritage Park is also hosting an Easter Sunday brunch on April 20, complete with gourmet and comfort breakfast items and an Easter egg decorating activity. Reservations are required as seating times vary.
