OAKLAND — A man was shot to death Friday afternoon in the East Oakland hills, police said.

Authorities did not identify the man immediately but said he is believed to be in his 30s. He died at the scene.

The killing is the 25th homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time, police had investigated 21 homicides in the city.

The shooting happened about 12:45 p.m. in the 8100 block of Fontaine Street, just south of Interstate 580, police said. Officers found the man down when they arrived.

Police were working to determine a motive for the shooting. They did not announce any arrests or identify any suspects.

The shooting happened near the King Estates education complex in the 8200 block of Fontaine Street, where one person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting in September 2022.
