Flash flood watch issued as new storm could bring nearly 5 inches of rain to foothill burn areas​on February 12, 2025 at 9:40 am

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A flash flood watch has been issued as a powerful new storm approaching Southern California could drop nearly 5 inches of rain in the charred foothills.

When will the next storm hit Southern California?

The first pulse of the storm system will move into the region starting Wednesday morning, bringing light and widespread rain across the region.

The brunt of the storm will follow closely behind on Thursday, and that’s when the stronger rain is expected to start.

A cold front will bring in the heaviest rain by late Thursday afternoon, along with a chance of some thunderstorms.

The steady amounts of rain are heightening concerns of debris and mudflows in recent burn scar areas in Altadena and Pacific Palisades. A flash flood watch for recent burn areas will be in effect starting Thursday afternoon through the night, according to the National Weather Service.

Showers will linger through Friday as the storm moves out.

As far as rain totals from this storm, lower elevations could see as much as three inches over the three-day period. Higher terrain areas, such as foothill and mountain communities, could receive as much as 5-6 inches of rain.

What will the weather be like Wednesday?

Los Angeles and Orange counties Wednesday will see a high of around 55 degrees and a low of 51. The storm is expected to drop between 1/4-1/2 inch of rain by the end of the day.

The valleys and Inland Empire will see similar temperatures, reaching a high of 55 and a low of 48. Expect between 1/2-1 inch of rain.

Beaches Wednesday will see a high of 57 and a low of 47. The storm is expected to drop between 1/4-1/2 inch of rain.

The mountains will see a chance for snow – about 1-3 inches – at elevations of 6,500 feet. A high of 38 and a low of 22 is expected.

Desert areas Wednesday will be around 54 degrees in the afternoon and 42 overnight. There’s a 60% chance of rain.
