WHEN we were younger, going on holiday with our parents seemed “uncool”.
But now many of us are planning multigenerational trips, to create memories and allow time to reconnect.
Whether it is taking Granny or Grandad on holiday with you and the kids, or taking a city break with your mother or father, now it is no longer looked at with raised eyebrows to spend some time away with your folks.
So, with that in mind, Sunway has put together a number of options for those of us who want to jet off this year with the people who shaped who we are today.
Whether that be exploring cultural cities or just lounging around in the sun, you’ll come back with memories to treasure.
Here, Travel Editor Nicola Bardon looks at some of the escorted options Sunway has to offer.
UNDISCOVERED BALKANS
LOOKING for a cultural trip in the sun that both you and your parents can enjoy?
This five-night, six-day break takes in Croatia and Bosnia, mixing beautiful natural sites and fascinating history.
You can see the crystal clear waters along the coast of Croatia and visit Plitvice Lakes National Park.
The country is a favourite with Irish travellers, and with gorgeous views, charming towns and rolling vineyards, it’s easy to see why.
In Bosnia, you can go to the city of Sarajevo and visit the historic Latin Bridge, where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, which triggered the First World War.
The city also has a buzzing local cafe scene so make sure you check out what’s on offer.
This trip costs €1,119pp including flights, 10kg bags, seven nights in a four-star hotel and three full day tours.
ADRIATIC TREASURES
AS with the Undiscovered Balkans tour, this trip takes in Croatia and Bosnia.
But this one should appeal to people interested in visiting religious sites – and ones used in popular a TV show.
For eight days and seven nights, you will be based in Makarska, which is located between the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea and the towering Biokovo Mountain, offering plenty of opportunities to take stunning photographs.
On day five, the guided tour will take you by coach to see Dubrovnik and Split, where you will learn about Croatia’s history and some of the more recent past when Game of Thrones was filmed here.
You will also see Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has been drawing Catholic pilgrims since people claimed the Virgin Mary appeared here in 1981.
The trip costs from €1,099 and includes return flights to Split, 10kg bags and prebooked seats, accommodation and tours.
THE ESSENCE OF ANDALUCIA
THIS trip takes in parts of Spain that might be considered off the beaten track.
You will check in to the four-star Sol Principe Hotel in Torremolinos, which is located right on the beachfront.
After a day of sunning yourself and drinking sangria, the first tour will take you to the town of Nerja to see the old part of the town, unchanged in decades.
Later that day, stop in Malaga for a short walking tour and look at the cathedral there.
On the fourth day, it is off to Gibraltar and one of the world’s most famous rocks.
You will also get the chance to go to Ronda, one of the oldest cities in Spain.
It is home to an 18th-century bridge, which spans a 100m deep gorge and divides the old and new parts of the city.
The trip costs from €1,169 for ten days and includes flights to Malaga.
Also included is your 10kg bag, four full day tours and nine nights in the hotel.
TIMELESS TREASURES
EVERY year there is a travel hotspot and this year it is Albania – which is just one half of this two-centre, eight-day trip that starts on the Greek island of Corfu.
Known for its sunshine and beautiful beaches, Corfu is also home to Venetian architecture and amazing cuisine. Soak up the atmosphere here before the tour takes you to your next destination.
Ancient ruins, stunning mountain vistas, and unspoiled beaches await in Albania – from the Unesco World Heritage Site of Butrint to the bustling charm of Saranda.
You will get to stay in a three-star hotel in Corfu for three nights before four nights in a four-star hotel in Saranda.
The trip costs from €1,599, including four of your dinners, 10kg bag and direct flights to Corfu, accommodation, ferry crossings between both countries and four tours.
All these tours are available on sunway.ie or call (01) 231 1800.
