Sandra and Travis Fredland are Alberta’s newest millionaires — 54 times over.

The Grande Prairie couple won a $54-million jackpot on the Lotto 6-49 draw on Dec. 28.

“I must have checked the ticket about three times at the terminal,” said Travis Fredland in a news release from the Western Canada Lottery Corporation.

“I took it to the cashier and said, ‘Check this one because there’s something odd with it.’”

What Fredland thought was “odd” turned out to be a massive surprise, as he held the winning ticket.

Fredland said he’s played Lotto 6-49 for many years, but when he saw the winning numbers on his ticket, he simply couldn’t believe it.

The Fredlands already have a few ideas on how they want to spend their big jackpot win.

“Retirement, of course,” said Sandra Fredland.

Travis Fredland said the couple plans to go to Palm Springs and enjoy their win, taking their time to figure out how to spend their money.

“Our sons are thrilled,” said Fredland.

“Our family is pretty happy about the whole thing.”

Winning that big of a jackpot is life-changing, but it can also be overwhelming, and Sandra Fredland said that they’re going to have to take “some time” to figure out what’s next.

The Fredlands purchased the winning ticket from Westgate New Horizon Co-op in Grande Prairie.
