At 7:26 of the second period Sunday afternoon at UBS Arena on Long Island, Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals passed Wayne Gretzky with his 895th career goal. One of three Gretzky records thought to be unbreakable just a few seasons ago, the milestone marker came on a power-play goal against a fellow Russian, goalie Ilya Sorokin.
Ovie’s 42nd of the season made the score 2-1, but play was halted for a blue carpet ceremony in which Gretzky, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and Ovechkin’s family attended and the 39-year-old Ovechkin gave a speech thanking teammates and fans. The Islanders also lined up to shake his hand, with the puck and other Ovechkin articles taken out of the game for the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Tom Wilson and Dylan Strome assisted ion the goal, New York’s Casey Cizikas was in the penalty box.
