Several hundred job cuts menace the wobbly Bay Area economy in fresh waves of layoffs for workers in the tech, biotech, energy and school sectors, according to official state filings.
Microsoft, Chevron, 10x Genomics, 23andMe, NetApp, NGM Biopharmaceuticals, Pliant Therapeutics and Downtown College Prep are among the employers that have decided to slash jobs in the Bay Area recently, a post by the state Employment Development Department shows.
All told, the eight employers have notified the state labor agency about their decision to slash 769 jobs in the Bay Area, according to information the state EDD has posted on its site.
The layoff disclosures arrive on the heels of big job losses for the Bay Area over the early months of 2025, the state EDD has reported.
Here are some details about the recent job cuts to jolt workers in the Bay Area:
— Microsoft, 86 job cuts in Mountain View and Santa Clara. The tech titan’s local downsizing is slated to occur July 12.
— Downtown College Prep, 99 layoffs in San Jose. The charter school will reduce staffing on June 30 as part of a decision to close all three of its schools due to declining enrollment.
— 10x Genomics, 93 job cuts in Pleasanton. The biotech company plans to complete the staffing reductions by July 7.
— Chevron, 65 staffing reductions in Richmond. The energy giant has scheduled the downsizing for July 1.
— 23andMe, 250 job cuts in San Francisco. The biotech company plans to chop workers on June 17 as part of a permanent closure of that site.
— Pliant Therapeutics, 69 layoffs in South San Francisco. The life sciences firm completed the staff reductions on May 1.
— NGM Biopharmaceuticals, 85 staff reductions in South San Francisco. The biotech firm plans to eliminate the jobs on June 30.
— NetApp, 56 job cuts in San Jose. The tech company plans to reduce staffing levels on June 28.
The job cuts were all described as permanent, according to the WARN notices.
