‘I don’t look at this as politics’: Kaine on what Democrats have gained from shutdown

Sen. Tim Kaine said Sunday he doesn’t see the present funding impasse in terms of politics, insisting what Democrats are “focused on is the American people.”

The Democratic senator says Abigail Spanberger has focused on the economy.

Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., said Sunday he remains confident ahead of his state’s gubernatorial election Tuesday between Democrat former Rep. Abigail Spanberger and Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears after Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won in 2021.

“In Virginia, we are the best red to blue turnaround in the country,” Kaine told ABC News’ “This Week” co-anchor Martha Raddatz.

Kaine’s said his assurance comes from Spanberger focusing on the economy and the affordability crisis that has impacted millions of Americans, especially as the government shutdown enters its second month, while her opponent has focused on cultural issues.

“Her opponent is running ads on offbeat cultural issues that don’t really matter to the most people in Virginia,” Kaine said.
