Cricket Australia is expecting stand-in Australian skipper Steve Smith to join Test teammates in Dubai later this week despite sustaining an elbow injury in Friday’s rained-out Sixers-Thunder Big Bash clash.
Smith was spotted on Sunday morning sporting an elbow brace on his right arm, which he had surgery on in 2019.
Smith, who is taking the captaincy from Pat Cummins for the two-Test tour of Sri Lanka, picked up the injury while throwing the ball at the SCG on Friday.
A Cricket Australia spokesperson said Smith is “preparing to join the Test squad in Dubai later this week following further specialist input”.
Australia’s Test players are assembling in the UAE for a short camp on wickets that will be prepared to match expected turning conditions in Sri Lanka, before heading to the island nation ahead of the first Test on January 29.
More to come.
