Irish actor is snubbed at the BAFTAs despite film’s huge success

Gladiator II was the hotly-anticipated film everyone was talking about in 2024 which went on to scoop an impressive €420million at the box office.

Despite its commercial success, Ridley Scott’s epic sequel wasn’t beloved by all and it remains to be seen how it fares during awards season.

On Friday, the BAFTA longlist of nominations was released and there was one name noticeably missing from the announcement.

Paul Mescal, who played Lucius, has been snubbed by the British Academy Film Awards just weeks after he was also overlooked by the Golden Globes.

Two years ago he was nominated for best actor at the BAFTAs and Oscars for his performance in the coming-of-age drama Aftersun.

It’s not all bad news for Gladiator II at the BAFTAs though as the longlist features nine nominations, including a best supporting actor nod for Denzel Washington, who played Macrinus.

Other Irish nods on the longlist include Saoirse Ronan’s nomination in the Best Actress category for her film The Outrun.

The production has also been tipped for Outstanding British Film, Director, Adapted Screenplay and Original Score.

Saoirse’s Apple TV+ movie Blitz has also been longlisted in seven categories including Outstanding British Film and Original Score, according to RTÉ.

Irish film Clodagh, which was directed by Portia A. Buckley, has also been longlisted in the short film category.

The big winner of the longlist however was Kneecap which has received seven nods including one for best film and original screenplay.

Another one to watch with an Irish link is The Apprentice, which tells the story of a young Donald Trump, and is from the Irish production company Tailored Films.

The winners will be announced on February 16 at a ceremony in London hosted by actor David Tennant.
