The Last of Us returns to screens on April 13 and fans of the American post-apocalyptic series can’t wait to see the Vancouver-filmed second season. “It’s good to be back,” noted series co-creator Neil Druckmann at a Los Angeles press conference earlier this week.

Adapted from the Naughty Dog video franchise for HBO by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, Season 2 is set five years after the explosive events that ended Season 1. The further adventures of Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, and Ella, played by Bella Ramsey, in a future where a mass fungal infection pandemic has caused the collapse of society and left surviving pockets of humankind facing off against mushroom-headed zombies promises to be intense.

As returning and new cast members noted in a press conference teasing the coming season, the shiitake is going to hit the fan in Season 2.

Pascal, Ramsey, Mazin and Druckman were joined by returning cast member Gabriel Luna as Tommy and new cast Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced ad Dina and Young Mazino as Jesse for a glimpse into what’s coming prior to the press screening gala at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. Another red carpet event is planned for April 10 at the Vue West End in Leicester Square, London.

Pascal and Ramsey touched upon the tension in their character’s relationship five years on. Apparently, a lot has changed.

“Ellie was 14, now is 19 and, in any teenager’s life, that is a lot of the formative years,” said Ramsey. “That definitely informs it, but there are obviously deeper reasons for their little rift.”

Asked if there were things to learn from the Last of Us to apply to a world that appears more apocalyptic every day, Pascal reflected on the impact of great storytelling in the series. Storytelling is cathartic.
