DALLAS — From the moment I walked into the Dallas Mavericks‘ practice facility for Nico Harrison’s end-of-the-year presser, there was a different vibe.
The Mavs were nice enough to provide food before the presser started. I can’t remember the last time that happened. There was also a nice welcome from the public relations staff before the proceedings began. Again – completely unexpected.
It was obvious. The Mavs were trying. Because they know, and admitted, that their handling of the aftermath in the wake of the Luka Doncic trade was untenable.
Mavs General Manager Nico Harrison didn’t back down on his reasoning for making the move, doubling and tripling down on his defensive-minded approach. He also vowed that the Mavericks will contend for a title next season.
We’ll hold them to that.
He thinks that simply winning can win the fans back over. That’s part of it, but certainly not all. Harrison also admitted he underestimated the outrage Mavs fans displayed in the wake of the Luka trade.
He’s been with the Mavericks for three years, making that admission an awful look.
When Harrison was asked if team governor Patrick Dumont forced him to make the trade, Harrison denied it flatly, adding he can be stubborn and doesn’t do well in those instances. Perhaps we have another change and improvement for the Mavs to consider.
Just saying.
