John Krasinski will return to the Off Broadway stage this May in Angry Alan, Penelope Skinner’s critically acclaimed dark comedy that premiered at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Directing will be Sam Gold.

The one-man play, which begins a strictly limited engagement on May 23 with an official opening on Wednesday, June 11, will be the inaugural production of Studio Seaview, the Off Broadway venue owned and operated by the Seaview production company. In recent years, Seaview has become one of the premiere producers of New York stage productions, with recent shows including Romeo + Juliet, Stereophonic and the current, record-setting Good Night, And Good Luck starring George Clooney.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be returning to Off Broadway, and to be surrounded by such a force of talent in Penny and Sam is quite literally a dream scenario,” Krasinski said in a statement.

Playwright Skinner and co-creator Don Mackay said in a joint statement, “When we created this play as a reading for the Aspen Fringe Festival, we never expected it to go on this thrilling journey. To one day find itself in the hands of the brilliant Sam Gold, the powerhouse talent of John Krasinski and the fantastic folk at Studio Seaview. We are so grateful and excited for the New York premiere of Angry Alan.”

The play’s official synopsis reads: “Roger is divorced, demoted, and drifting – lost in an era that no longer makes sense. But when an online personality promises clarity, Roger dives in without looking back. Timely, provocative, and darkly comedic, Angry Alan explores one man’s journey down the digital rabbit hole – examining how far he’s willing to go, and how much he’s prepared to lose, for validation in a world where ‘everybody’s changing the rules.’”

Director Gold, whose recent Broadway productions include Romeo + Juliet with Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler, An Enemy of the People with Jeremy Strong and Michael Imperioli, and Macbeth with Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga, said, “I’ve been looking for years to lure John to the stage. What a dream it’s going to be with such a vital piece of writing from one of my favorite writers and collaborators. I can’t wait to get started.”

The play had its official premiere at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, earning strong reviews. Angry Alan has since been staged in theaters around the world but will be making its New York debut with the Seaview production.

Seaview announced its acquisition of the Tony Kiser Theatre in January 2025. The historic venue in Manhattan’s Theater District had previously been owned and operated by the non-profit Second Stage Theater company. Since the acquisition the 296-seat theater has been redesigned by designers Scott Pask and Brian Tovar, Todd Snyder and CB2.

Angry Alan and the Studio Seaview debut is the latest Off Broadway venture of the Seaview production company, which last year produced Hold Onto Me Darling starring Adam Driver at the Lucille Lortel Theatre and, at the same venue in 2023, produced Danny and the Deep Blue Sea starring Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott. Seaview also produced Sweeney Todd in a 2017 revival at the Barrow Street Theatre.

“It is our honor to be launching Studio Seaview with Penelope Skinner’s searing play Angry Alan,” said Greg Nobile, Co-Founder and CEO of Seaview. “Penelope’s words reverberate in the most urgent way at this very moment, and we are eager to bring them to life on stage with the great John Krasinski, under the direction of our beloved collaborator Sam Gold.”

Angry Alan will feature scenic design by the dots collective, costume design by Qween Jean, lighting design by Isabella Byrd, sound design by Mikaal Sulaiman, video design by Lucy MacKinnon, and properties by Addison Heeren. Niamh Jones will serve as associate director and Kate Wilson as vocal coach.
