EXCLUSIVE: Matlock is on the case for the Publicists Guild. The group said today that Kathy Bates will receive its 2025 Television Showperson of the Year Awards at the 62nd ICG Publicists Awards luncheon on February 28.
The annual award honors an individual whose accomplishments in TV best represent that special spirit traditionally defined as showmanship. Patrick Stewart received the honor at last year’s ceremony.
“Kathy Bates has consistently captivated audiences with her versatility, depth and the sheer power she brings to every role,” Publicists Awards Chair Tim Menke and Sheryl Main said in a joint statement. “It’s our honor to celebrate her unrivaled career and dedication to her craft.”

And quite a career it has been. Bates had done plenty of guest shots on TV and appeared in smaller film roles when she got her signature role in Misery, playing a novelist’s (James Caan) uber-fan who rescues him from a car wreck then makes life hell for the poor guy as he recovers. She won a Best Actress Oscar for the 1990 pic, launching her career into overdrive.

Bates went on to earn three Supporting Actress Oscar noms for Primary Colors (1998), About Schmidt (2003) and Richard Jewell (2020). Along the way she has amassed 14 Primetime Emmy nominations, winning for a guest role on Two and a Half Men in 2012, and currently stars in CBS’ hit Matlock reboot. She landed a Golden Globe nomination for the series’ first current first season — and was seen ripping up her acceptance speech after losing to Shōgun‘s Anna Sawai — and also is up for a SAG Award and Critics Choice Award this month. The crime drama already has been renewed for Season 2.
