RCMP are investigating after election signs belonging to Lethbridge Liberal candidate found Sunday spray painted with a hate symbol and foul language.

Chris Spearman posted images Sunday on social media of several vandalized signs in Coaldale, a town about 18 kilometres east of Lethbridge that’s also in the federal Lethbridge riding.

RCMP said Monday morning that police received a report just before 2 p.m. Sunday that five signs were damaged and eight were missing. The incident is being investigated as a mischief, said RCMP, who are asking for the public’s hep in identifying those responsible for damaging the signs.

“It’s upsetting — not just for me, but for what it says about the tone of our politics,” said the former Lethbridge mayor on social media Sunday.

It’s illegal, costly and wasteful to deface election signs, and discourages people from running in elections, he said.

“Running for office — regardless of political stripe — takes courage,” said Spearman.

“And like many candidates across the country, I’m doing it because I believe we can make things better.”

Spearman thanked Coaldale residents and those across the riding for their ongoing support, and also encouraged voters to cast a ballot on April 28.

“It’s time to stop the hate — and work together for something better,” he said.
