Should driver’s licences list citizenship? Vote in our daily poll! In a news item on Sept. 15, Jason Kenney warns of the “deeply divisive” impact of a sovereignty referendum in Alberta. Kenney referenced “a tiny core of flighty, discontented Albertans.” Well, Mr Kenney, I’m one of the approximately 30+% of Albertans in that tiny core.

You also said we were “… all attacking Ukraine and cheering on (Russian Leader) Vladimir Putin. They were all cheering on (U.S. President) Donald Trump, when he was attacking Canada with tariffs and the threats of making us become the 51st state.” Nope, not me, and I definitely believe that the majority of that “tiny perennially angry minority” have similar opinions.  Mr Kenney, it was your comments that are “bananas.”

(Perhaps, but you can’t speak for all Alberta separatists no more than Kenney can.)

Driving fears

The cartoon picture in Sunday’s paper on page 12 really resonated with me as I am a school bus driver. The fact that no one thinks about the thousands of drivers who will be out of work if the teachers go on strike is pretty sad. I know the parents worry about their children, but who worries about us?

Monica Schulz

(A strike will affect many people.)

Teachers deserve better

So much is spoken about money for teachers and not enough credence to working conditions, like the number of teachers assaulted by students. The placement of a special needs student in a classroom of 30 other students with no aid for the special needs student. Please take a serious look at working conditions. Money is nice but not the be all.

The Alberta advantage?

We have the lowest minimum wage of all provinces and territories. We have the second-highest unemployment rate (Newfoundland and Labrador is higher). We have the lowest funding per student of all major cities in Canada. We are the only province clawing back the federal disability benefit from AISH (funding for the severely handicapped). We are the only province charging $100 for the COVID vaccine. And only in Alberta, permission must be granted for your child to opt into sex ed classes. And to top it off, on International Literacy Day, Sept. 8, the most important concern of our province is a preoccupation with books that may depict sexual content. After the international embarrassment, clarification that sexual content is OK but no visuals are allowed.

Evelyn Tait

(Many would disagree that all of these are issues, but we do have problems.)
