Speaking to reporters in Nanaimo on Friday, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre outlined his party’s plan to ensure gun and fentanyl smugglers — as well as human traffickers — get sent away for life.

“Here in British Columbia, people are more afraid than ever before of crime,” he said.

“Violent crime is up 50%, human trafficking up 84%, calls to the national human trafficking hotline up 238% in the past six years.”

Perpetrators of these crimes, Poilievre said, are often released on bail or parole, where they frequently re-offend.

“Opioids have killed 50,000 people during the lost Liberal decade or decriminalization and tax-funded (drug) supply,” he said.

Re-electing the Liberals under Mark Carney, Poilievre said, would mean more of the same.

Poilievre promised to repeal Bill C-5, which eliminated mandatory minimum sentences and end house arrest for serious offenders, reinstate mandatory prison sentences for gun, drug and human traffickers, repeal Bill C-75 which he described as the “Liberal catch-and-release law,” and end Bill C-83 — which Poilievre said allows serious offenders like mass murderers to serve their time in medium-security penitentiaries.

“We will ensure the monsters that kill our people and endanger our communities go to jail for life,” he said.
