FORT WORTH, Texas — A former TCU student from Fort Worth who admitted to causing the death of Dallas billionaire T. Boone Pickens’ grandson has been sentenced to 51 months in federal prison for gun crimes.
In 2013, Brennan Trainor Rodriguez, now 33, admitted to injecting heroin into 21-year-old Ty Pickens, who then died from an overdose. Rodriguez and Pickens were both TCU students at the time of the incident. Rodriguez was placed on deferred adjudication for dealing heroin.
He was given 10 years of deferred adjudication, which started in November 2014. The conditions of his community supervision prohibited him from possessing firearms until his deferred adjudication period ended, court documents show.
In August 2024, a little more than three months before his deferred adjudication was expected to end, Rodriguez’s ex-girlfriend told police he had been stalking and harassing her since their breakup and reported that Rodriguez regularly shot guns, according to a news release.
About a week later, he was arrested. While searching his home, police found nine firearms, including a rifle equipped with a machine gun conversion device, the release states.
He was indicted in October 2024 and pled guilty in December 2024 to illegal possession of a machine gun. Rodriguez was sentenced to federal prison on Friday, April 4, by U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor.
Rodriguez could also be convicted for the state crimes of delivery of a controlled substance and stalking. Those cases are still pending.
