Police in Sherwood Park have arrested and charged a man with arson after a statue of a prominent Canadian soldier was destroyed in a fire.
On March 21, just before 10:30 p.m. Strathcona County RCMP and emergency crews responded to a fire near the intersection of Athabascan Avenue and Broadmoor Boulevard in Sherwood Park, said police in a news release on Wednesday.

Upon arrival, they discovered the Sam Steele Memorial Statue on fire.
Police said the statue was destroyed as a result of the fire and police were able to locate and arrest the suspect in the area a short time later.
Sebastian Reddeman, 23, of Sherwood Park was charged with arson and failure to comply with an undertaking. Reddeman was remanded into custody and was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday in Sherwood Park.
“Somebody reported the matter in a timely manner and that helped us respond to ensure we were able to locate the suspect quite quickly,” said Strathcona County RCMP Const. Cheri-Lee Smith.
