Calgary police have made an arrest after a disturbing incident at a southwest Calgary elementary school on Wednesday.

Two Nelly McLung School students in the southwest neighbourhood of Palliser on April 2 reported to school staff that they saw a man near the school, who then went to a treed area and allegedly exposed himself while looking at the students.

Using witness descriptions and CCTV footage from a nearby residents, police were able to identify a suspect and make an arrest the following day.

Police praised the students for taking action and said exposure incidents can be ‘traumatizing’.

“Indecent acts are traumatizing to anyone, especially young children,” says Sergeant Trent Barker-Petersen of the Calgary Police Service. “We recognize that it can be difficult to report such acts, and we are thankful that the students came forward. This is a criminal offence and there is zero tolerance for such highly inappropriate behaviour in our community.”

Alejandro Jose Cervera-Marin, 26, faces two counts of indecent exposure to persons under the age of 16, two counts of criminal harassment and one count of intimidation.

Cevera-Marin was also charged under the Education Act with one count each of loitering or trespassing on school property and conduct detrimental to safe operation of a school.

His first court date is scheduled for May 20.
