The man police believe killed a woman in the southeast community of Ogden last week is charged with second degree murder.

Around 9 p.m. on Friday April 4, police responded to reports of a disturbance in a residence located in the 7600 block of 23 Street S.E.

One woman was found dead on scene, and police believed the incident was “targeted” initially.

On Wednesday, the Calgary Police Service identified the victim as 31-year-old Maria Hirmiz. Police have deemed her death a “domestic related homicide”.

Police executed a search warrant of the residence on Monday, arresting a Calgary man.

Bearj Gerald Melanson, 41, is charged with one count of second-degree murder and will appear in court on Thursday.

“Domestic violence is a complex problem that can only be addressed when everyone in the community works together to end it,” said CPS in a Wednesday release, adding that Calgarians experiencing abuse or violence in an intimate or family relationship are always encouraged to ask for help.
