A confrontation with the man in the alley near 98 Avenue and 156 Street led to an officer opening fire, police said.

A 36-year-old man was fatally shot by police Tuesday after a complaint he entered a west Edmonton residential yard before pointing a gun at a resident.

Officers called to the area near 97 Avenue and 163 Street at 12:46 p.m. found a man nearby matching the description of the gunman who fled on foot after taking aim at the resident, police said in a Tuesday night news release.

A confrontation with the man in the alley near 98 Avenue and 156 Street led to an officer opening fire, police said. Officers at the scene began first-aid before Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived, transporting the man to hospital where he was declared dead.

What police believed to be a firearm was still on the ground as an officer worked to collect evidence in the alley hours later.

No one else was injured in the shooting.

Police notified the Director of Law Enforcement, who has since directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to conduct an investigation into the case.
